Hello and Welcome from Diane Marsland at English Decoratives

Introducing my first blog post with a Hello and thank you for visiting my site. I shall be not only sharing all of my inspirations for my artwork and designs but insights to my work process which can differ considerably depending what I am working on.

The English Decoratives Studio is Northumberland based near the beautiful market town of Hexham. I run the studio and create all the collections by myself which when I am super busy can be rather a juggling act. I hand paint all of my work and only have my design collections digitised for print when I want to produce wallpapers or textiles.

Many people ask about the name English Decoratives and where it originated and why as I didn't just used my name as the brand. The main reason was initially I intended English Decoratives to be a collective of designers and artists ( more of that later)

English Decoratives the brand, celebrates an English eclectic and eccentric style. A love for flowers, nature, history, global decoration, modern day trends and mixing it up with wild abandon. It is a pattern mix for pattern lovers and I certainly did not want to be confined to a trend, or specific look....... which I know these days is a little unusual as marketing advice always encourages brands to stay loyal to one look, colour, style etc.  I find this difficult to adhere to.

During my very long career I have worked in freelance studios, textile mills, interior design houses in the UK and overseas. Designing for retail groups, textile brands and bulk print textile manufacturers. I had various roles over the years from designer, artist and interior decorator to management, buyer and producer for home textiles. I was expected to design and develop for all the different markets with particular specifications and technical restrictions. To be versatile was key and perhaps because of this it has become the foundation to my style.

Today, is perhaps a little less hectic as I focus more on bespoke commissions of murals, silks and wallpapers for the client that is looking for a more unique piece.  However I am never far away from the every day world of design, art and interiors.

I hope that you join me in this crazy world of art, painting and exploration of pattern

Diane
